Under general supervision and reporting to the VP of Quality Operations, the Supplier Quality Development Engineer serves as a vital link between SMS and our Prime Aerospace customers. The Supplier Development Engineer is a "hands on" role that will identify and drive projects to improve Delivery, Quality and Cost performance within the Supply Chain. The Supplier Development activities are focused on product and process performance for all production including New Programs, Current Production and Legacy, providing the link between Group Quality, Procurement and Supplier interacting with all relevant functions as required. The Supplier Development Engineer will ensure the day-to-day project execution & coordination at the Supplier. The Supplier Development Engineer is responsible for the development of our supplier base. Will utilize expertise in Quality, Purchasing, and Operations and will be deployed to our suppliers to ensure continuous improvement of their operations as well as containment of situations.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS - Essential functions are the basic job duties that an employee must be able to perform, with or without reasonable accommodation.

• Assess suppliers manufacturing and quality processes through performing supplier audits following various standards depending on the type of audit or assessment. Audits may include but not limited to the following: AS9100 Compliance, special processes, APQP, process, and product audits
• Conducts regular capacity, and development assessments and audits at suppliers to diagnose issues and establish continuous improvement plans to improve overall strategic supplier performance
• Drive open delivery & quality issues at Suppliers to resolution using appropriate problem-solving tools
• Schedule and conduct reviews with Supplier & Procurement as required
• Perform on-site supplier visits for root cause analysis and verification of corrective actions of supplier quality issues
• Promote and facilitate the use of customer preferred techniques for continuous improvement such as LEAN, Six-Sigma, Poka-Yoke, and Process Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (PFMEA)
• Support suppliers in evaluation of existing manufacturing or business processes, identification of opportunities for improvement and development of solutions to optimize supplier performance using various problem-solving techniques
• Support management meetings as required
• Develops a recovery plan, capacity studies, quality audits etc
• Organized regular report outs to ensure closure of all open action items
• Provide support for Lean manufacturing and continuous improvement initiatives as required
• Monitors overall supplier scorecards to proactively visit suppliers BEFORE their issues become a chronic issue affecting on time delivery and potential shut down situation
• Provide assistance for NPI and Source Change/Works Transfer activities upon request
• Conduct capacity verification process and verify production trial runs Drive capability (Ppk & Cpk)
• Provides Training and Support to the Supplier in order to improve quality and delivery
• Establishes best in class Supplier Improvement Tools--defining the tools available, instructions and training to drive improvements (RCCA, Pareto, Lean Tools, Kanban, Smart Inventory, etc.)
• Performs other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

• Process Improvement and other "tool box" processes (i.e. DFMEA, PFMEA, MSA, SPC, PPAP, APQP, Lean Manufacturing, 5S, TAKT, 5Why, 8D, etc.)
• Supplier Quality and Supply Chain Improvement
• Statistical techniques
• Aerospace regulations and requirements
• Microsoft Office software packages (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
• Post-secondary degree in Engineering or equivalent combination of relevant education and work experience that will allow successful performance of job expectations
• HNC/D or degree (preferred but not essential), in a relevant discipline (engineering / manufacturing based) PPAP experience including FAI
• Experience with the completion of Aerospace audits is preferred.
• Preferred formal continuous improvement qualification (green or black belt)
• Flexible and prepared to travel on a regular basis
• Demonstrates thorough understanding and is capable of implementing current Supply Chain techniques
• Understanding of various processes in a manufacturing setting
• Understanding of various processes related to Planning/Scheduling

LICENSES, CERTIFICATES & OTHER REQUIREMENTS

• US or International citizenship or permanent residence status required depending on work location.
• Fluent English – reading and writing is required
• Pass pre-hire background check including DMV and credit screening
• Pass Pre-hire Drug Screening
• Reliable transportation - must have current/active drivers' license and auto insurance.
• Travel 70% or more depending on criticality of issues
• Vision exam is required prior to hire. Requirements are as follows:
• The General Vision Acuity Test shall be performed by an Oculist, Optometrist or other professionally recognized person. The following requirements shall apply.
• Near Vision – Eyes meets Orthorater 8 (95% or Jaeger #2 at 12 inches)
• Far vision – Eyes meets Orthorater 4 (76%) or Snellen Chart 20/50
• Color Perception – 6 of 9 Orthorater plates
